Maria Sharapova reclaims the world number two spot – Tennis News
Russian tennis diva, Maria Sharapova, lost in the semi-finals of the US Open Championships but she still bagged enough points to overcome the Pole number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, to reclaim the world number two spot in the WTA
Premier Rankings. The latest edition of the women’s rankings this Monday has placed Sharapova in the second slot, with Radwanska slipping down to the third position.
Riding an excellent form this season, the slender-legged Russian has won three WTA championship titles in the running professional circuit, including the all-prestigious French Open crown. She was rated as one of the hot favourite
contenders for the US Open title but her Grand Slam campaign was brutally hampered by the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the semis. Sharapova contested very well to take the opening set but dropped the later two sets in succession to end
her journey at the Flushing Meadows Park.
Sharapova currently holds a 49-8 winning record for the season so far and has closed the ranking points’ gap between her and Azarenka. Her form has been sublime throughout the current season and she aims to bag a few more titles
before the professional circuit ends this year.
She has lost five WTA finals this season, showing her tendency to crumble in the big matches, yet she has maintained her position in the Top-3 women’s rankings since her return after the long injury lay-off. Sharapova openly accepted
that she was extremely frustrated at her semi-final loss against Azarenka at the US Open but she is very hopeful of making a strong comeback in the events to follow. It was her sixth defeat at the hands of the Belarusian, leaving her dejected in the end.
It seems hard for the Russian diva to topple Azarenka for the top spot in the WTA rankings, since no more Grand Slam events are left in the remaining season. She is about 1800 points behind the Belarusian number one and it will
take some miraculous effort from Sharapova to rise to the world number one spot this year. Third ranked Radwanska is also closed place behind Sharapova in the women’s rankings and might overtake her in the tournaments to follow.
