Maria Sharapova regrets her sub-standard performance in the Miami final – Tennis News
World number two, Maria Sharapova, sustained her dismal run in the finals this year, with another embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Pole number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami. She
committed 45 unforced errors in that match and drowned herself to a third consecutive loss in the final of the major Women Tennis Association events.
It all started from the final of the Australian Open when she was bullied across the courts by the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka. She had an opportunity to win her fourth Grand Slam title and once again become the
number one player in the world but she squandered that completely.
The second final was played in Indian Wells during the BNP Paribas Open when she again fell at the hands of the Belarusian tennis ace, Azarenka. She was with a clear cut opportunity to have the revenge of the earlier loss this
year and more importantly grab her first title of the season 2012.
This was the third major event when Sharapova wasted a mammoth opportunity to win her maiden title at Miami which was her childhood dream. Ever since her triumph in Wimbledon, way back in 2004, she had dreamt of winning the Sony
Ericsson Open title. On Saturday, she was allotted with an opportunity but her title drought remained intact courtesy to her sub-standard display.
She accepted the fact that she was fighting not only Radwanska but her unforced errors as well. She stated, “It's obviously a combination. You want to put pressure on her to go for a little bit more maybe when she's, you know,
moving, but she moved extremely well."
Talking about the supreme quality of the Pole’s returns, Sharapova mentioned, “She hit a lot of good balls on the run and they were deep. She didn't just bring them back; she had something on them.” She further added, “Well, I
was down 4-5 and I held and it was 5-all, and I was love 30 at some point that was in the second set and I didn't take those chances. I was always playing from behind."
However, despite her losses, she has a magnificent record of 18-4 this year, entering into the clay court swing of the season. She was the finalist in the French Open last year and will look to repeat the heroics this year as well.
