Maria Sharapova sails through Wimbledon opener
Maria Sharapova has started her Wimbledon campaign in style, dropping just one game in her opening match against fellow Russian Anastasia Pivovarova.
The 2004 champion breezed through to the second round in just 54 minutes, hitting 14 winners to her opponent’s three in an utterly dominant performance.
While Sharapova couldn’t have hoped for a better start than a 6-1, 6-0 victory at Wimbledon this year, there are much tougher challenges than the world No. 127 waiting not too far into the draw. If the 23-year-old continues her winning form into the fourth round, none other than defending champion Serena Williams will likely await.
