Maria Sharapova slaughters her opponent; Venus Williams cruises too – Australian Open 2013
Former world number one stars, Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams, breezed past their opponents to progress into the third round at the Australian Open 2013 on Wednesday. The second seeded Russian devastated her opponent, Misaki Doi, with double bagels while the American veteran recorded a straight set victory over Alize Cornet at this first of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Melbourne, Australia.
Seeded second at the Melbourne Park, Sharapova unleashed flurry of winners to crush the Japanese contender in just 47 minutes. Both contenders were battling each other for the first time and after stealing the show, the Russian become first player to record second straight double bagel in a Grand Slam event since Australia’s Wendy Turnbull in 1985.
The jubilant Russian was quoted in an on-court interview after crippling her opponent:
"I was just trying to be focused today - I didn't know too much about my opponent, I just knew she was a few inches shorter than me. It's always tough, especially when you're up a set and a couple of breaks, to keep that momentum. I really forced myself to concentrate and get the job done."
The high flying Russian clobbered a better first serve share and spectacularly clicked 17 out of 19 points on it to dominate. She smashed 16 winners and spilled only nine unforced errors to rule the match.
Next in queue for Sharapova is the American star, Williams, who triumphed over Cornet with a 6-3, 6-3 score line. She was a break down in the start of each set but recreated her magic and recorded the straight set victory to advance.
The American icon was commented about her next match-up against Sharapova, "I don't think about things that way - I play the ball. There are going to be days when you play great and win, and there are going to be days when you play not as great and you win. Whatever day that is, you have to win."
Sharapova currently leads 4-3 in the head-to-head series against the American. She has also won in their previous battle in Rome last circuit.
