Maria Sharapova slays Shahar Peer to reach round two – London Olympics 2012
Third seed, Maria Sharapova, devastated the Israeli number one, Shahar Peer, with a bagel at the London Olympics 2012 on Sunday. She nudged up a 6-2, 6-0 victory against the world number 49 to cruise into the second round at Games of the x*x Olympiad taking
place in London, United Kingdom.
The former world number one, Sharapova, displayed top notch performance to crush Peer in her first ever Olympics appearance. Battling each other for the seventh time, the Russian improved to a 7-0 lifetime in the head-to-head series against the 25-year-old.
The gorgeous Russian was quoted in a courtside interview after the match:
"This was a big opportunity for both of us and I wanted to make the best of it. The roof being closed meant it was a little humid inside, so the conditions changed a little bit from what we were practicing in the last week, but it was nice to get a win in
my first Olympic match. Shahar is capable of playing really, really good tennis. I had a tough match against her in Miami a few months ago, so I knew she could be tricky. She's a good fighter and gets a lot of balls back, so you have to be ready for that."
Sharapova made a sloppy entry at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and suffered the first blow in the opening game to trail at 0-1. However, she wiped out the following four games consecutively before Peer could hold on again. The Russian bagged
the last two games and sealed the opener by winning six games to two.
The Russian top went berserk in the follow-up set. She blasted massive groundstrokes to reel off all six games in a row.
Overall, Sharapova hammered 11 times more winners as compared to her Israeli rival.
Next up for Sharapova is the conqueror of the match between Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova and Britain’s Laura Robson.
The second seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, became casualty of the day. The Polish flag bearer bowed out to the German contender, Julia Goerges, with a 5-7, 7-6(5), 4-6 loss.
