Maria Sharapova takes revenge from Sabine Lisicki in round three – London Olympics 2012
World number three, Maria Sharapova, had a perfect revenge of the earlier loss at the hands of the 20th ranked German, Sabine Lisicki, at Wimbledon on the eve of Wednesday. She lost the opening set 6(8)-7 but bounced
back to win the following two 6-4and 6-3 respectively to reach the final eight at London Olympics.
Lisicki won the first game of the match with a breakpoint to her name. However, she lost the lead instantaneously but did well breaking her opponent’s serve again to further enhance the lead to 3-5. However, she couldn’t capitalize
on that and failed to hold serve in order to win the first set.
Both players held their respective serve games to enforce a tie-breaker round into play. Not many people thought that the Russian superstar will lose the tie-breaker but she did after failing to recapture the lost mini-break the
dying stages.
Lisicki had defeated the former world number one in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships just three weeks before. So, Sharapova was on the revenge mission and there is no other better feeling than beating the player
on the same stage where you lost to her. However, her revenge mission probably took a u-turn when the 22-year-old German won the first set.
Sharapova, as expected, fought back in the contest in the second set. A swap of breakthroughs in the seventh and following game kept the scores together at 4-4 but the Russian extracted another breakthrough in the 10th
game that allowed her to level the set scores at one apiece.
An exchange of breakpoints in the inception of the final set hinted at a tight battle but the Russian again snapped a breakthrough in the ninth game to win the match in three sets.
Talking about the match, Sharapova commented, "I wasn't happy with the way I played when I lost to her a few weeks ago, so I wanted to change that result. Even though I didn't play my best tennis today exactly, I was really happy
I stepped it up when I had to and got through it.”
Commenting about her next opponent, the Russian stated, "There are no secrets going into the match tomorrow. We've been on the tour for many years. We've faced each other many times before. We know each other's games quite well.
It's always nice to face her, especially at this stage of an event like the Olympics."
Kim Clijsters is the next opponent for Maria Sharapova.
