Maria Sharapova takes the revenge of the last year's Wimbledon loss – Tennis News
Former world number one, Maria Sharapova, sizzled at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia in the semi-final battle against the 2nd ranked Czech, Petra Kvitova. It was one of the most gruelling contests of the
tournament that was prolonged to the three-sets. After an epic battle being fought, it was the Russian beauty queen, Sharapova, who booked a place in the title match.
The triumph levels the head-to-head scores between the two semi-finalists and the win meant a lot to the Russian. She was talking to a media representative during a post-match interview and stated, “I just felt in the third set
she had the advantage because I was always down on my serve. I thought I had to hit it and don’t let her finish the points the way she likes to. I just hung in there and got a few returns in that final game, perhaps that was the key.”
It was a ‘must win’ match for Sharapova to inch one step close to her fourth Grand Slam championship title. If she manages to do that, she will also climb to the top of the world rankings and once again become the most deserving
world number one.
Brilliant resistance was put forth by the reigning world number two but it appeared to be just a matter of time that Kvitova couldn’t cash in the vital opportunities she crafted in the match. Instead, she gifted the match to her
opponent; she was leading the last set with a break up and had another opportunity of breaking the serve (two break points). Kvitova will be ruining her misses as she is now out of the tournament and forgoes an opportunity to move on top of the world ranks.
Plenty of people in the arena stood and applauded the fight by the Czech. Sharapova agitated her a lot throughout the match that enraged Kvitova, who smashed racquet at the court few times in the match. The delight at the face
of the Russian told the whole story and her roaring screams at the winners were escalating the tempo of the game all the time.
It sets up one of the most classic draws for the grand finale of the tournament as world number three Victoria Azarenka takes on the 4th ranked Russian, Maria Sharapova. Earlier in the day Azarenka cracked down the defending
champion, Kim Clijsters, in an enthralling three-setter. The Australian Open title is at stake and both the finalists are fuming with confidence to claim the title.
