Maria Sharapova talks about the experience of being an Olympian – Tennis News
Russian number one, Maria Sharapova, attended the opening ceremony of Olympics on the eve of Friday as a flag-bearer for her nation and explicitly enjoyed the whole experience of being the leading character from her nation in the
march towards the middle of the Olympics Stadium in Wimbledon, London.
Sharapova talked to the about the opening ceremony of Olympics Games and expressed the experience of being a part of it as a flag-bearer in the following manner, “The ceremony is something I'll cherish for the rest of my life.
Growing up, I think I was 10 or so, I was watching the ceremony, and I had this huge dream - I thought I must be really crazy - but I saw the Russian nation walking out. I don't remember who was carrying the flag then but I thought it was so cool, and that
maybe one day I could do that.”
She expressed her flashback of memory by stating, "As I was walking there, it hit me, that memory of me watching on my small little TV in my room, just being so proud and hoping one day I could be there.”
It must have been a terrific feeling for the 25-year-old Russian to be honoured with such dignity and pride at the world’s biggest sporting event, held four-yearly. She is ranked number three in the world and entered the London
Games as the third seed.
Sharapova contested her first match on the eve of Sunday against the 49th ranked Israeli star, Shahar Peer. It was the seventh face-off between the two warriors and the Russian led the head-to-head scores by 6-0 at the
start of the match.
Former world number one faced no pressure at all at the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis Club and smashed 6-2, 6-0 score to open her account in the hunt for gold medal. She is one of the strongest contenders to take
home gold medal for Russia. Last time, her country clean swept the entire world by winning gold, silver as well as bronze medal. However, it might not be possible this time around considering the strong competition from American players like Serena Williams
and Venus Williams.
Still, the 6’2 tall Russian blonde can take home some glory by clinching the supreme gold medal at the Olympics Games. Next up for the Russian beauty queen is the winner of the match between Laura Robson and Lucie Safarova.
