Maria Sharapova thinks there are no favourites at the French Open – Tennis News
In-form Russian beauty, Maria Sharapova, believes that there is no player who can be termed as 'favourite' to capture the women’s singles title at the French Open this season.
Sharapova said this after crushing Alexandra Cadantu of Romania in twin sets 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the Roland Garros on Tuesday. Such was the level of her supremacy that she did not allow the Romanian contender to claim
even a single game and concluded the win in merely 48 minutes. The world number two banged 18 winners and won 51 points in a highly one sided encounter.
The Russian said, talking to the reporters in Paris, “Nothing is ever easy because you have to face whoever is across the net, and no matter how good or bad they are, you still have to win that match. That was just my goal. Everyone
has a good chance. It’s always about who takes their chances.”
Sharapova is proved right if we see the fate of one of the title favourites, Serena Williams. The American star entered the tournament in top form and was looking to recapture the only Grand Slam on clay courts after a gap of 10
years. However, she was stunned by Italy’s Virginie Razzano in the very first match of the tournament.
Top seed, Victoria Azarenka, also fought back after losing the first set and getting down 0-4 in the second to win her opening match here.
The Russian has also been termed as favourite at the French Open, as she had captured titles at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix Open and Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
She added, “I feel like with every year I’ve improved and I enjoy it much more. I learn a lot more about the game, the point construction and I feel I’m moving a lot better than I did years previously. So it definitely gives me
a lot of confidence for this tournament.”
Sharapova is bidding to win the only Grand Slam that has eluded her so far. The Russian captured her first Major at the Wimbledon Championship in 2004 by beating Williams in the final.
