Maria Sharapova thrashes Sorana Cirstea in round two – China Open 2012
World number two, Maria Sharapova, trashed the 29th ranked Romanian, Sorana Cirstea, in the pre-quarter final clash on Wednesday. She registered straight sets score line of 6-2, 6-2; hardly breaking a sweat in a contest
of an hour and 18 minutes during the China Open at Beijing.
It was a cracking display from the 25-year-old Russian who was playing her first match against Cirstea. She never looked in any sort of trouble and hammered the ball to all sides of the courts at her will. The 22-year-old Romanian
had no chance at all and surrendered quite early in the contest; just played through it with a lost heart especially in the second set.
The opening set witnessed a cracking little play from Sharapova. She grabbed the breakpoint in the third game and posted a resounding lead of 4-1 courtesy a serve hold. She lost just four points on her serve and managed to squeeze
another breakthrough in the seventh game that totally shattered the confidence of the Romanian diva.
The start of the second set witnessed no change of luck for the Romanian. She was hammered away in the opening game; failed to hold serve. The second seed Russian didn’t have to work hard for her points from that stage. She just
steered the ball at her will and clinched another breakthrough in the seventh game that allowed her a stupendous lead of 5-2.
No point was won by the 29th ranked Romanian in the final game of the match and that rounded off the proceedings from the centre court of Beijing. It was a pleasure watching the former world number one on the top of
her form.
In a post-match interview, Sharapova said, “I had never played Sorana before but she has beaten top players and is one of those players who can come out and just have a great day. She hits really flat and hard, so I tried to play
aggressively and take her time away. I'm happy I played a shorter match than I did in the first round."
Maria Sharapova takes on the Slovenian qualifier, Polona Hercog, in round three.
