Maria Sharapova to debut in 2012 Brisbane International – Tennis News
Former World No.1, Maria Sharapova, will be making her debut in the upcoming Brisbane tournament in the year 2012.
Talking to the press, Sharapova said “I have never been to Brisbane before and coming into the Australian Open I felt like Brisbane would be a good place for me to start the year. It is the first tournament of the year and it’s
kind of where you see where your game is and how good your off-season has been and so you try and get in as many matches as you can before the Australian Open”.
Tournament director, Cameron Pearson was extremely excited to announce the inclusion of the Russian Wimbledon finalist to their prestigious Brisbane Tournament players list. Sharapova has never contested in this tournament before
and it will be her first priority to clinch this title at the start of next year. Her inclusion will enhance the viewership of the tournament as she is one of the most wanted players to be seen in action.
Current World No.4 has won 23 titles during her career and has been three times Grand Slam champion. She will like to add Brisbane title to her tally as well and kick-off the next year season on a high note. This year has been
very tough on her as she couldn’t hit her top form due to chronic shoulder injury but has been reaching advanced rounds of major tournaments regularly. She started her year with couple of loses at WTA Championship but picked up her pace in Tokyo where she
reached the quarters before being knocked-out by Current World No.2, Petra Kvitova.
She lost in the US Open in rounds of 32 but explored her best form in Cincinnati and clinched her first title of the year defeating Serbian Jelena Jankovic. She lost in the quarter-final in Toronto but shut her critics with an
emphatic run in Wimbledon, reaching the final but again failing to beat Kvitova on her second meeting with her, this year.
Russian lost to Chinese sensation, Li Na, in the semi-final of French Open but made the headlines after her scintillating show at Rome, defeating Samantha Stosur and clinching second title of the year. Madrid tour was one of those
she would like to forget but Miami was another success as she reached finals before being slammed in straight set by Victoria Azarenka.
She played semi-final in Indian Wells and reached quarters in Auckland as well. Her shoulder injury erupted again when she was playing Pan Pacific Open. Unfortunately she had to retire but her comeback next year is eagerly waited
all across the globe.
Sharapova’s fans hopes for a delightful return with a title to her name in Brisbane. This tournament has been upgraded to Premier Tournament with prize money of $655,000 and kicks-off from January 2nd 2012.
