Maria Sharapova to feature in the Brisbane International 2013 – Tennis News
World number two, Maria Sharapova, is the third Top-10 player to pen down a deal with the Brisbane International officials for participating in the next edition of the tournament that will begin on 30th December at Queensland
Tennis Centre and extend until the 6th of January. The reigning French Open Champion is the most probable top seeded player for the contest because the likes of the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, is expected to snub the Brisbane tournament
and commence her new season at Apia Sydney International but nothing is confirmed as to date.
“I am so looking forward to coming to Brisbane for the Brisbane International. It will be my first time attending so I can’t wait to see all my fans there. Going into Australia after a long off season you always want to have the
best possible matches. I tried to put Brisbane on the map last year but unfortunately couldn’t make it out of injury. I have heard so many great things about it. It is such a big event for all the players.”
The Russian slender-legged blonde will join in the likes of the 15-time Grand Slam Champion, Serena Williams, and the former US Open Champion, Samantha Stosur, ranked third and ninth in the Women Tennis Association list respectively.
Williams, 31, is enjoying her time after a struggling season in 2011; won seven titles in the current season and registered three emphatic spells of unbeaten runs lasting 17, 19 and 12. The last one is still intact and will resume at the Brisbane International
when the third ranked American will take the field in Queensland.
Sharapova also struggled with niggling injuries in 2011 and couldn’t play the most part of the season with full throttle. However, she made a remarkable comeback in the Australian Open; reached the final of the competition and
probably looked at her best form; big booming forehand winners coupled with powerful backhand drives were working fine for the 25-year-old Russian blonde and that emphatic phenomena continued until the end of the season. She was able to dethrone the Belarusian
number one, Azarenka, from the top spot in the rankings but just for a fraction over a couple of weeks after winning the maiden French Open title at Paris. It will be interesting to see if she can continue her tremendous run of form in the upcoming season
that promises a lot of entertainment.
