Maria Sharapova topples Caroline Wozniacki in the exhibition match – Tennis News
In an exhibition match between two former world number one players, Russia’s Maria Sharapova beat Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in New York on Monday. The match was played at the indoor multipurpose arena,
Madison Square Garden.
Wozniacki invited her boyfriend Rory Mcllroy, a professional golfer, to play a point against Sharapova in the last game of the match. Wearing jeans and a sweater, Mcllroy hit a couple of shots before Sharapova hit the return wide
and awarded the point to him.
This happened a few hours after Mcllroy rose to the number one spot in the Golf rankings, as he won the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Wozniacki, who is currently number four in the world, had been ranked 1st for a total of 67 weeks in her career so far.
Mcllroy said he has to stay at the top for two more years to match her girlfriend’s feat. The Irish said that it is nice to take a little break from golf.
Wozniacki and Mcllroy plan to spend some time together in Miami before the later goes for participating at the World Golf Championships and the former reaches Indian Wells to play BNP Paribas Open.
Sharapova and Wozniacki will try to grab their second title at the BNP Paribas Open these two weeks. They are seeded second and fourth at the event respectively. Sharapova won the title in 2006 and Wozniacki is the defending champion.
A few hours later, Andy Roddick of USA defeated 16-time Grand Slam champion, Swiss Maestro Roger Federer, in straight sets 7-5, 7-6(7) in the second exhibition match of the night.
The American, who trails Federer 2-21 in their career head to head record at the ATP World Tour, jokingly said after the match, "I'm obviously in Roger's head."
This was Roddick’s first appearance at the Madison Square Garden.
The American said, "To be able to play here where so much history has happened, so many events have happened in every area of entertainment, it was a real special experience for me.”
During the match, Roddick imitated Nadal by playing a point with the racket held in his left hand and grunting after ever shot.
He added, "It was a great atmosphere. I really enjoyed myself and that led to me playing well. Hopefully I can use this a little bit."
Troubled with multiple injuries in the near past, Roddick has dropped to 31st position in the South African Airways ATP Rankings.
