Maria Sharapova wants to snatch the top spot in 2013 – Tennis News
Russian tennis ace, Maria Sharapova, is very hopeful to claim the world number one spot in 2013 and is determined to perform to the best of her abilities.
In an interview Sharapova told the media, “Obviously the goal is always to shoot for top spot and that's always where you want to be and stay. It's one thing to reach the No. 1 ranking, another to keep it. But what's most important
and the main goal is to win as many matches as you can and then the rankings takes care of itself. To get to No. 1 the only thing to do is to work hard and you have to treat every match, no matter what it is, the same. That's what we all do.”
The right-hander suffered tough period due to her shoulder surgery at the end of the year 2008. Nonetheless, she made an outstanding comeback in 2012 and reached the world number one spot after winning the Roland Garros Grand Slam
event. Sharapova gave the Italian challenger, Sara Errani, a straight sets defeat, 6-3, 6-2, in the final round of the French Open held at the clay courts of Paris.
Recently, the gorgeous Russian professional is at Milan to contest in an exhibition tournament against the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic. They will battle against the Italian contender, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci.
Ranked second in the WTA Premier Rankings, Sharapova was the finalist in most of the major tournaments and exhibited an excellent grip against all her competitors. She bagged home a silver medal in the London Olympics, due to a
troubled stomach.
The Russian professional displayed a decent performance at the US Open but lost against the reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka. She regained her momentum at the hard courts of China Open held at Beijing but once again
was unable to conquer the might of her Belarusian challenger.
The 25-year-old Russian contender was the finalist of the WTA Championships held at the indoor hard courts of Istanbul. She pocketed away a straight sets loss at the hands of the American veteran, Serena Williams, who dominated
due to her powerful serves and remarkable consistency.
Sharapova is a very strong contender for all the tournaments next season and with immense dedication and zeal, she promises that she would not be easy to conquer!
