Maria Sharapova will claim the world number two spot next week – Tennis News
Russian beauty queen, Maria Sharapova, has made it to the final of the BNP Paribas Open after winning the semi-final brawl against her fellow compatriot, Maria Kirilenko, on Friday. Her most recent victory has not only earned her
a title shot at this WTA Premier Mandatory event in Indian Wells, but also propelled Sharapova to the world number two spot. The 25 year-old will be crowned the second ranked player in the WTA Premier Rankings from the coming Monday.
Sharapova took off the running season as the world number three player and hasn’t been able to win a single title until now. She is currently having 13-2 winning record for the current circuit and is aiming to end her title drought
of 2013 in Indian Wells. The Russian blonde didn’t lose a single set in the entire tournament so far, annihilating every opponent in straight sets to reach the title match.
She will have to take down the liked of the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in the final of the BNP Paribas Open. Sharapova leads 4-2 against the 10th ranked Dane and has won the last two encounters taken
place between them. The Russian beauty is in prime form and is considered to be the hot favourite for winning the Saturday’s big match. Wozniacki is considered lucky to reach the title match, as she received a walkover against the top seeded defending champion,
Victoria Azarenka, in the quarter-final round.
Sharapova is all set to bag the Indian Wells trophy and she is expected to take down her opponent in straight sets.
"I saw some of those points," Sharapova said. "They were really high and they all kept going in - I was like, 'That's a really good effort. I don't think I can do that.'
"Caroline is dangerous when she has the opportunities to open up the court and runs you side to side."
"Maria is a great competitor and fights for every point," Wozniacki said of the Russian. "She plays very aggressively and tries to take every ball on the rise and plays very flat - it's going to be very tough."
Azarenka will move to the third place in the WTA Premier Rankings, while Serena Williams remains at the top of the list.
