Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor rallies past Eva Fernandez-Brugues in Andalucia Tennis Experience
18-year-old Spanish wildcard, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor made a tremendous come-back to rally past her fellow compatriot, Eva Fernandez-Brugues to qualify for the main draws of the Andalucia Tennis Experience at Marbella, Spain. After dropping the opening set,
Torro-Flor maneuvered through the later sets to seal victory at 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, taking two hours of play on Monday.
After a shaky start to the competition, Torro-Flor showed great commitment to the game and exhibited her mental resilience to outplay her opponent. She took advantage of error-ridden game play of Fernandez-Brugues, who conceded 17 costly double faults in
the contest to end on the losing side.
Fernandez-Brugues faced few difficulties in the opener and overwhelmed her opponent by winning most of the points in the game. She coughed six costly double-faults in the set without hitting an ace, but remained very proactive to pinch cross-court winners
on regularity. Torro-Flor was accurate with her first serve, reaching 74 percent, but collected just 10 out of 25 points on it. She inflicted two break points to her opponent’s serve, but had to suffer four from her side to remain on the back foot in the opening
set.
Torro-Flor saved four break points, but eventually had to submit the first set to her fellow compatriot at 3-6. The Spanish teenager made a very strong come-back in the next set, breaking her opponent in the very first serve game, but an immediate serve
break from Fernandez-Brugues leveled the scores to 1-1. Torro-Flor broke again into a 3-1 lead and kept straining hard to keep ahead of her opponent.
An exchange of two more serve breaks each were seen from the competitors and Torro-Flor sealed the second set at 6-4 to remain alive in the contest. She was assisted by eight double faults from Fernandez-Brugues who won 48 percent of total points in the
set.
After squandering a break chance in the second game of the decider, Fernandez-Brugues dropped serve in the next game to trail 1-3. The 18-year-old kept pressurising the other Spaniard who finally crumbled at 1-6 after suffering three more serve breaks from
Torro-Flor, who books a berth in the main draws of the Andalucia Tennis Experience.
