Maria Torres wins the Girls Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship
Maria Torres parred the 18th hole in the final round, to claim a one-stroke victory at the Girls Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championship, on Sunday, December 30, 2012.
The tournament was being staged at the Biltmore Golf Course, featuring a number of prominent amateur female players from different parts of the world. A total of 33 players participated in this year’s edition of the event.
Torres marked a decent start to her final-round campaign, by carding two birdies against a lone bogey on the front nine to reach the turn in one under.
Thereafter, she completely lost control over her game and started making big mistakes on the course.
However, she was lucky that Megan Khang, the overnight leader, faltered for a six-over par 77, which provided Torres a chance to take home the prestigious title.
Torres bogeyed the 10th, 13th, 16th and the 17th hole, to go three-over for the round. Entering the final hole, she was sharing the top spot with Nicole Morales.
The 18th hole witnessed Morales struggling with her game, as she conceded a bogey-six. Torres, in the meantime, took advantage of the scenario and tapped in the ball for a par putt, to secure her victory in the event.
Talking to the reporters after winning the tournament, she said that she was herself shocked to see her name on top of the leaderboard on its own.
“I can’t believe I just did that. I’m feeling great,” said Torres. “I don’t have so many emotions, but this tournament is a big one. I am proud of myself”.
“I’m very happy, for me, my coach, my country,” Torres said excitedly, after checking and rechecking her card, almost in disbelief. “Every day I’ve hoped, expected, to make birdie at the last hole and each day I’ve made a par. Today I really thought I would
need a birdie to tie Nicole, but I get a par again, and I win. It was a big surprise”.
In boys division of the tournament, Patrick Kelly came out of the field as the victory, after he carded a 19-under par tournament score to record a massive 13-stroke victory.
