Mariajo Uribe firm to face big names at Wegmans LPGA Classic
Colombian Mariajo Uribe is brimming with confidence after displaying a better-than-expected performance at the ShopRite LPGA Classic 2012, as she has now set her sights on the Wegmans LPGA Championship 2012.
The tournament is slated to be played from June 7-10, at Pittsford, New York, with a strong field featuring top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) contenders.
Uribe played a sensible game last week, despite the strong contending names, like Yani Tseng, the world number three Suzann Pettersen, Paula Creamer and Lexi Thompson.
Like the ShopRite LPGA Classic, this week’s tournament is also going to feature most of the top-ranked LPGA contenders, making the field more appealing.
The Colombian star appears to be in high spirits, and she will try to prove her worth once again. She troubled some of the strong contenders at ShopRite Classic.
She kicked off the tournament in an impressive style, as she posted 67 in the opening round to consolidate her position on the leaderboard.
Uribe let down her fans on the second hole of the opening round, as she made a double bogey. She regained her composure quickly and shot a birdie on the par-5 3rd hole.
She received a big round of applause when she made her second birdie on the par-4 5th hole. On the back nine, the Colombian star played an even more sensible game, as she drained four birdies and one bogey.
Although she tumbled to the 18th spot from the 7th in the next two rounds, golf commentators said that the young golfer has shown resilience and consistency, which will help her further improve her game.
Speaking to the media about her performance, Uribe said that she will try to keep the momentum going in the upcoming tournaments.
She added that she is working hard on her swing. The rising star said that she likes to play short course, which helps her make long hits.
“I think I am a little bit long, but I'm hitting it straight with my driver, so I think that's helping me out and just hitting really good hybrids into the par-5s and stuff like that, so just stay patient and making putts,” the 22-year-old golfer said.
