Marian Gaborik scores shootout game-winner as New York Rangers win 2-1 over Anaheim Ducks-NHL Update
Both goalies were outstanding during the Anaheim and New York matchup, but Henrik Lundqvist made the crucial saves in the shootout to the Rangers to their second straight win, 2-1, against the Ducks, Thursday night, November 3, 2011, at the sold-out Madison
Square Garden in New York, New York, United States.
Marian Gaborik emerged as the game-winner for the Rangers after making their last attempt successful by firing the puck past Jonas Hiller, handing down Anaheim their fourth straight loss.
"I'm happy I got a chance to go", said Gaborik, who with 7 shots was the Rangers' best offensive player during the first 65 minutes. "I had my move before I went. I think it was about time. I haven't gone for quite a few games. I'm happy I got a chance and
I'm happy I scored".
Remaining consistent in their offence and defensive manoeuvring throughout the contest was what eventually led New York to win, according to Gaborik.
"We held onto the puck in their zone and had quite a few chances, so we're happy overall that it worked out", Gaborik said. "In the first period, we had a lot of shots, but slowed down in the second period. But we picked it up again".
Jeff Woywitka finally scored his first goal of the season with less than three minutes remaining in the opening period. Three seconds later, Andre Deveaux and George Parros were booked with major penalties for fighting while Corey Perry and Brandon Dubinsky
roughed each other up a bit and were given minors.
Luckily for Anaheim, Bobby Ryan scored his fifth of the season and the games equalising shot at the 18:18 mark in the second period off an assist by Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf.
Both teams failed to capitalise on any power play opportunity throughout the match.
Erik Christensen scored on New York’s first shootout attempt while Teemu Selanne gave Anaheim another chance on their second last chance, but after Marian Gaborik capitalised on the Rangers last chance, Bobby Ryan failed to keep them alive on his next.
Rangers play their next at home against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, while Ducks have one more on the road against Detroit Red Wings the same day, before returning home for the following three contests.
