Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver clinch Women’s Doubles title at 2011 Bulgarian International
England’s Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver won the Women’s Doubles title by stamping their supremacy over India’s Pradnya Gadre and Prajakta Sawant in the final match of the 2011 Bulgarian International, on Sunday, October 9, at Sofia, Bulgaria.
World Number 23 pair of Agathangelou and Olver, who were top seeds in the Women’s Doubles’ draw of the tournament, finished the battle in 42 minutes by working hard for three games.
In the opening game, the Indian shuttlers proved that their victories in all previous rounds of the event were not a fluke as they have the skill to beat the big guns of the event on a given day. They played wonderful badminton and maintained pressure on
the top seeds. Until the break, Indian ladies were leading the game with an 11-8 margin.
After the break Agathangelou and Olver lifted up their level of play but not enough to get rid of the attacking game of the Indians, who were not missing any chance to score points. In the ending phase of the first game, the English duo committed a couple
of unforced errors and lost the set to the Indians by a margin of 18-21 in 18 minutes.
Nevertheless, it was a surprisingly different story in the second game when Agathangelou and Olver bounced back and took the second game in incredible fashion. The firing English duo dominated the game from the first point and thrashed the Indians without
showing mercy to them in the whole game.
The Indians failed to remain consistent in the second game and lost their control over the pace of rallies. Agathangelou and Olver levelled the match by taking the second game with a remarkable difference of 21-7, in just 10 minutes.
The top seeds continued their killing run in the deciding set by keeping the pace at the maximum level. The Indians failed to match the pace of the English pair in the whole game. Agathangelou and Olver ended the final set by a stunning margin of 21-10 in
just 14 minutes. The ending result of this wonderful three-set battle was 18-21, 21-7 and 21-10.
