Mariana Duque-Marino ousts Marta Domachowska in the final qualifier – Family Circle Cup 2012
Colombian booming star, Mariana Duque-Marino, crushed the Pole tennis professional, Marta Domachowska, in the final qualifier of the Family Circle Cup on Sunday. She squashed her opponent in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 taking just an
hour and 26 minutes.
It was the second face-off between the two players. They first met at the hard courts of Moorilla Hobart International in Hobart three years ago. At that time, the Pole was in a better shape to demolish her opponent and she did
exactly that; grabbing the triumph. The tables were turned upon her this time around and she couldn’t repeat a similar performance at the clay courts of Charleston, USA.
The opening set witnessed three quick breakthroughs in the starting phase of the match. The lead rested with the Pole who led the breakpoints ratio with 2:1 at that stage. However, the Colombian fought back into the contest; broke
serve to diminish the trail and registered a thumping serve hold to level the scores at 4-4.
Suddenly, the momentum of the match swirled in favour of the 22-year-old Colombian who grabbed the following two games courtesy to a beautifully crafted breakthrough in the 10th game to win the set. It was such a majestic
turnaround that no one in the arena could believe it.
Trailing one set down and looking a bit frustrated at her first set performance, Domachowska started the second set with an aggressive frame of mind. However, she failed to mix the attacking shots with some defensive slow-paced
returns. A series of breakthroughs were witnessed at the end of the second set. Both players traded breakpoints twice before Marino took the final game of the set and clinched the main round spot.
Marino is scheduled to go head-to-head against the Russian tennis icon, Nadia Petrova. The former Top-10 Russian player is fuming in with confidence having won the doubles title in the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami, just two days
ago. It will be a very tough task for the Colombian representative to move into second round but she is capable of pulling up an upset as well.
