Mariana Duque-Marino slays Nadia Abdala in round one – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Colombian qualifier, Mariana Duque-Marino, flashed past the local wild card entrant, Nadia Abdala, with a bagel at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Tuesday. She nudged up 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Mexican to advance into the second round at this WTA (Women’s
Tennis Association) International event taking place in Acapulco, Mexico.
The Colombian number one ruled throughout the match to outclass Abdala in an hour-long marathon. She spilled more errors but clobbered a much better first serve share of 61 per cent as compared to the Mexican’s 49 per cent. Duque-Marino also impressively
clinched 21 out of 30 points on it and pocketed the last nine games to steal the spotlight.
Ranked 168th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Duque-Marino drew the first blood in the opening game and took the early lead. Despite levelling the scores at 1-1, she stroke out the following five games in a row and pulled out the breadstick. The Colombian
warded off three out of four breakpoints she faced and cashed in all four break chances.
The 22-year-old kept her winning ways into the following set. She blasted massive forehands and backhands to go on a six-game killing spree, eventually sealing the set with a superb 6-0 score line. The Colombian saved the only breakpoints she came across
and converted half of the six break chances to her advantage.
Regardless of the crowd support, the local star barely did anything in this match. She disappointingly marked six out of 21 points on it and capitalised on only one out of five break opportunities.
Next challenge for the Colombian rising star is the sixth seed, Johanna Larsson, who bounced over the Kazakh qualifier, Sesil Karatantcheva, in three sets to secure this spot.  Duque-Marino should practice harder to face and overpower a seeded player in
this event.
The Romanian qualifier, Edina Gallovits-Hall, also earned the glory at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess. The Romanian was unsuccessful in defending both breakpoints she encountered but converted four out of nine break chances to clinch the match with 7-5,
7-5 score line.
Gallovits-Hall will next face the third seeded Italian, Sara Errani.
