Mariana Duque-Marino upsets Tetiana Luzhanska in round one - XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas 2012
Colombian tennis ace, Mariana Duque-Marino, showed immense willpower to bounce back from behind and win a taxing contest against the superior-ranked American contestant, Tetiana Luzhanska. She lost the first set but stayed
composed to fight back and win the contest, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, in the first round match of XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas tournament.
It was the maiden professional contest between the two competitors. No psychological or mind games could be played upon the previous record; that led the foundation for the local contestant to oust the 146th ranked
American.
The match kicked-off with an initial onslaught from both ends. Both players strained past their respective opponents to hold their serves in the opening few games. The American contestant broke serve in the fourth game to
take the lead. An exchange of breakpoints in the following two games kept her lead intact. Scores progressed to 4-2 in her favour.
Local tennis star was trying hard to win the second break back but wasn’t provided with any opportunity at all by her counterpart. The opening set ended in despair for the local. She was unhappy from her performance but wasn’t
low on confidence. She knew she could fight back in the following set and win back the support of the crowd.
Both players held their respective serves games before trading breakthroughs in the third and fourth game. Despite a very tough battle in the following games, no one was able to earn a breakthrough for the first eight games.
Scores tickled past to 4-4 with Marino to serve the next game. All pressure was on her to deliver; successful hold was vital at that stage in order to shift back the pressure on her opponent.
The Colombian showed composure and bagged the ninth game after sparing just one point for her opponent. Pressure was back on the visitor who failed to tackle the all-round onslaught from her rival. Marino took advantage of
the pressure situation and played maximum points at the net to bring in the drop shots into play. She won the pivotal breakpoint and enforced the third set into play.
A nervy start to the final set witnessed both players just managing to hold on to their opening serve games before the visitor broke serve to take the lead and silenced the crowd. She broke serve again to double the lead
but a classic comeback witnessed couple of breakthroughs in succession for the local who levelled the scores at 4-4. The momentum was running in favour of Marino who stole another breakpoint in the twelfth game to oust her opponent and progress to round two.
Mariana Duque-Marino contests against the winner of the match between Sharon Fichman and Lourdes Dominguez Lino in the second round.
