Marianne Vos wins the Elite Women's category of Superprestige Diegem 2011
Dutch cycling sensation, Marianne Vos, added another victory to her inspirational career as she won the cyclo-cross in Diegem recently. The World Champion was looking good right from the start of the race and did not appear to be troubled by any cyclist.
It was a difficult day as heavy showers made it pretty tough, especially on the climbs but Vos was not bothered by any of those hurdles.
She comfortably crossed over the sharpest climb of the Diegem course, where most of the cyclists were wobbling. The 24-year old finished the race in a total time of 42 minutes and 20 seconds.
Lucie Chainel-Lefevre of France stood second. She finished 1 minute and 44 seconds behind Marianne, whereas Sanne Cant was further 17 seconds adrift, at third spot.
Gabriella Day, Sophie de Boer, Nikki Harris and Sabrina Stultiens occupied the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh positions, respectively.
It was a bad day for Suzie Godart, Hannah Payton, Katleen Fraeye, Madara Furmane, Caren Commissaris and Beatrice Godart as they failed to finish the race.
Vos commented on winning the event, "If cyclo-cross can be easy at all, then this was more or less easy. I've been going extremely well this week. Out of all four races, Surhuisterveen was the toughest race of all. Clearly this is top form".
Sanne Cant admired her performance as she stated, "I don't know how she [Vos] did it, but she rode on while I hopped off the bike half way up the climb, I trailed her by a few seconds, but she rode too fast".
The cyclist is considered to be one of the best in cyclo-cross, MTB Track and Road racing disciplines.
She has achieved a number of victories during her career, including eight gold and six silver medals to her credit.
Four of her gold medals came in at the World Championships cyclo-cross, one at the Beijing Olympics, two at World Championships and one at the road bicycle racing World Championships.
She secured one silver medal at the Cyclo-cross World Championships along with a maximum number of five second positions at the Road bicycle racing World Championships. She failed to achieve the first position for five consecutive years.
Vos is keen to break the spell in the coming season as securing the first position at the UCI Road World Championships is amongst her biggest goals for 2012.
