Marianne Vos wins third stage in 2011 Giro d’ltalia Internazionale Femminile
Nederland Bloeit team’s Marianne Vos showed her good performance in the mass sprint and won the third stage of 2011 Giro d’ltalia Internazionale Femminile on Sunday July 3. She also took the overall leader’s jersey.
The 24-year-old Dutch track racer took a total of 2 hours, 58 minutes and 4 seconds to cover the distance of 104.3 kilometres.
After winning the stage, Vos told the media, "It was a very difficult stage, especially in the final part. I'm really pleased to have regained the pink jersey. I hope to keep it for as long as possible, but I will take it day by day.”
Recently, Vos took the Dutch National Cyclo-Cross Championships and UCI Cyclo Cross World Championships. She also took the UCI Track World Championships and Ronde Van Drenthe.
Emma Pooley of the Garmin – Cervelo team was in the second place with 19 seconds behind Vos. Judith Arndt of HTC Highroad Women finished third with a difference of 2 minutes and 50 seconds.
This stage is difficult for the riders because it contained six mountains, while a group of five riders including Ashleigh Moolman (Lotto Honda), Valentina Scandolara (Gauss), Emma Pooley (Garmin – Cervelo), Sharon Laws (Garmin – Cervelo) and Evelyn Stevens
(HTC Highroad Women) got away.
All of them gained a lead of few seconds. Moolman was in good form and took the first and second mountain ahead of Andrea and Tromp. After 70 kilometres, Vos increased his pace and Pooley followed him. Both of them were wored together, but Vos attacked and
Pooley was unable to maintain his pace.
Rasa Leleivyte (Vaiano Solaristech) took the title of Young Riders with a time of 3 hours and 54 seconds. Elena Berlato was in the second spot and Elisa Longo finished third.
Marianne Vos also took the overall King of Mountain (KOM) title ahead of Emma Pooley and Tatiana Guderzo grabbed the Italian rider classification.
Marianne took the overall classification with a time of 7 hours, 50 minutes and 46 seconds, while Sylwia Kapusta was the runner-up with a difference of 8 seconds. Emma Pooley finished third with a difference of 36 seconds.
The next stage will start in Forlimpopoli and end in Forli. All the riders will cover the distance of 101 kilometres.
