Marianne Vos won the Fidea Cyclo-cross Leuven to secure her ninth win of the season
World Champion Marianne Vos brought an end to her 2011 campaign in a tremendous way. She won the last race of the year with a stunning performance at the Fidea Cyclo-cross Leuven.
Vos had a terrific season right from the start but saw most of her success in the latter part of the year. She finished the race in a total time of 34 minutes and 35 seconds.
The Dutch rider was in supreme form as she secured the ninth win of the season. Her most recent victory came at the GVA Trofee when she sailed through the finish-line, with a huge lead of 1 minute and 17 seconds over Daphny van den Brand.
She cited, "It was long and far. Boring? Yeah, a bit but you have to remain focused".
"There was no opposition today but that was caused by the demanding course. After the first lap I already had a big gap and from there I had to stay in the rhythm," stated Vos.
Her win at the Fidea Cyclo-cross event this Friday was even more convincing. She claimed yet another large lead of 2 minutes and 5 seconds over the second place finisher, Daphny van den Brand.
Marianne briefed tv-channel VT4, "It wasn't super exciting for the spectators but I certainly enjoyed it".
Van den Brand was the only cyclist who put up a tough challenge against Vos during the first lap. However, she could not maintain the lead.
The contest was much closer for the second position with Sophie de Boer and Daphny van den Brand finishing with a margin of merely 5 seconds.
Pavla Havlikova of Team Telenet-Fidea Cycling occupied the fourth position. She was 2 minutes and 22 seconds behind Marianne.
Sanne Cant secured the top position for Belgium after finishing 5th. The British cyclist, Gabriella Day of Team Renner Custom Cyclo-cross finished sixth.
Sven Nys dominated the men’s category after securing a convincing win over his compatriot, Rob Peeters. Nys took 1 hour and 10 seconds to finish the race whereas Peeters was 55 seconds adrift.
Francis Mourey of Team FDJ occupied the third spot with Radomir Simunek at fourth and Sven Vanthourenhout occupying the fifth position.
Marianne Vos and Sven Nys ended the year on a high note. The cyclists are looking forward to 2012 as the next year will feature some more exhilarating events, packed with even more enthralling performances.
