Marianne Vos’s near miss at the World Championships continues – Cycling News
Dutch rider Marianne Vos has continued the tradition of securing a podium place at the UCI Road World Championships. She was tested during the 140 kilometre race by the Italian rider Giorgia Bronzini who finished the race first. Vos was looking good and
seemed as if she would win the gold this year but could not match the Italian rider as she twisted the game in the final 300 metres.
Marianne was disappointed on not winning the top podium position as it was the fifth time she has missed the chance on the gold medal. She won her first and only gold medal at the Elite Women Road Race during the 2006 World Championships as she finished
ahead of Trixi Worrack of Germany and Nicole Cooke of Great Britain. It was her first year of senior racing as she dominated the race and showed her class straight away.
In the next five chances that she had including the 2011 World Championships at Copenhagen Vos has finished second which makes it a total of one gold and five silver medals at the Championships. She commented about the event as she said, “It's the world
championships. There's always a lot of pressure in that race. That's what you do it for, you race for the big races and it's great to do the world championships for your country."
The 24-year-old has had a wonderful season as she has won the Fleche Wallone, Ronde Van Drenthe and Giro Donne along with the Cyclo-Cross World title. Her hopes of winning the biggest cycling title of the year however could not be fulfilled. On winning the
consecutive fifth silver medal she said, “I didn't believe it was possible to get five silvers in a row." She further added that, “I made a mistake not to go in the sprint. It was a bit late, and when I started the sprint I think it was close but not enough."
Dutch rider admitted that Giorgia Bronzini deserved the victory as she has ridden superbly and at the end of the day one cyclist has to win and it was the Italian. As the Women road race has concluded all eyes are now on the Men’s Elite road race which is
indeed a main event of the World Championships 2011.
