Mariano Rivera gets 600th save as New York Yankees defeat Seattle Mariners 3-2 – MLB Update
Mariano Rivera achieved a milestone as he got his 600th save in his career as the New York Yankees overpowered the Seattle Mariners 3-2 to take their second straight win in the three-game series at Safeco Field in Seattle on Tuesday, September
13.
Robinson Cano launched a home-run in the second and a game winning RBI single in the sixth while Jesus Montero scored on a wild pitch by Charlie Furbush in the second to help the Yankees win their 90th competition this season.
Allan Jones Burnett gave two runs, one each in the second and the third inning, but rebound and completed his six innings for his tenth win of the season. His win was obvious after he struck-out eleven batters over just 103 pitches. Right-hander documented
his record to 10-11 with a 5.20 ERA after 30 starts of the 2011 MLB regular season.
Despite getting a win, Burnett now has increased his wild pitches to 24 this season. It is the most wild pitches by any Yankees’ player in team history. The previous record was 23 by Tim Leary in 1990.
Cano set a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning and Rafael Soriano along with David Robertson defended it with their unplayable pitching performance. Robertson struck-out three batters and allowed two walks to get his 33rd hold of the season.
Mariano Rivera tossed a perfect ninth inning to get his 41st save of the season and the 600th save of his career. He is just one win shy of the Major League Baseball record set by Trevor Hoffman.
Charlie Furbush could not provide the Seattle Mariners an ideal start in a crucial outing and gave away three runs on seven hits including a game opening homer to Cano. His five innings had set the Yankees foundation after the hurling performance of their
pitchers.
Brendan Ryan and Miguel Olivo each scored an RBI single in consecutive innings but could not save their club from their 87th loss of the season. Mariners will now only be looking to save themselves from 100 losses in a season.
Yankees are now confirmed to make the post-season having 90 wins under their belt.
