Mariano Rivera gets one year contract – MLB Update
New York Yankees and veteran relief pitcher Mariano Rivera have agreed to a one-year $10 million contract after a whole set of rumours about both sides future relationship.
Yankees now re-signed three of their most talented Major League players and roared ahead for their next MLB outing. Hiroki Kuroda, Andy Pettitte and now Rivera, experts believe that Yankees are on right track to go into a fresh season.
“I’m at the point, if I didn’t feel like we had a chance to win deep down I wouldn’t do this. I feel like we’ve got a certain group of guys that are still there and that know how to win and know how to get it done and that we can still do that,” Pettitte said.
After a row of consistent injuries in the past season, Rivera was not sure over his future relationship with the Yankees. He has played his entire career in the Yankees but only this offseason, he felt a little alert on getting a potential extension.
“He wants to play again, I'll work with his agent, Fernando Cuza, on the details of a contract," said Cashman.
“I'm coming back Put it down. Write it down in big letters. I ain't going down like this," Rivera said in the past.
However, Yankees once again showed enormous confidence in him and gave Rivera another year to show off his talents.
Mariano Rivera, despite playing just nine games, still managed to impress the Yankees and received a one year extension. He played last season with 2.16 ERA along with five saves, eight strike-outs and 0.96 WHIP.
Rivera will earn $10 million excluding team bonuses. His contract came just before the 2012 Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings which makes things slightly easy for the Yankees now.
Earlier news came out in the media that Rivera’s contract will come after the Winter Meetings as Yankees need to specify some salary matters.
According to new Collecting Bargaining Agreement (CBA) all the Major League teams have to abide by the Major League Baseball authority’s salary cap conditions.
However, it is good that Yankees solved all their matters within the time-frame and did not prolong Rivera’s re-signing issue.
