Mariano Rivera helps New York Yankees defeat Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 – MLB Spring Training News
Mariano Rivera was quite outstanding on Sunday, March 11 as he helped New York Yankees defeat Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 in their Grapefruit league game of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session. The Phillies may be very disappointed with
the outcome of the game but they were outclassed in almost every department of the game.
The Yankees, on the other hand, made the most of on hand opportunities to establish complete control over the contest. Showing great control and accuracy, Yankees’ pitchers did not let the Phillies’ batters score a single run in a fairly one sided contest.
Rivera produced a magical performance at the George M. Steinbrenner Field, Tampa Florida to receive a standing ovation from around 10,000 spectators. The closer has given some great results since making major league debut. At the age of 42, the running year
can be the final season of Rivera’s career.
Yankees’ ace, C.C. Sabathia provided his team with an excellent start as he pitched a perfect innings on his first spring training appearance of the year to help his side secure a 3-0 win over Philadelphia. Sabathia made the most of his opportunities last
season to help the Yankees make it to the playoffs.
"It's the first outing," Rivera said. "You just have to do what you have to do, and I think I did what I wanted to do. I threw my pitches, felt good, and I'm waiting for the next outing."
"Fastball command was pretty good," Sabathia said. "Secondary pitches were working. Still have a little ways to go. Still want to work on my two-seamer and being able to throw that at any time, but feel good today. Really, our bullpen is probably the strength
of our team. Just to have all those guys back there and Mo closing it up."
To power the pitching attack, Yankees’ General Manager Brian Cashman has added the likes of Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes to the bullpen. It will be interesting to see if the Yankees can produce similar performances during the regular season.
Phillies, who have a poor 5-5 win-loss record this spring, will be looking to bounce back strongly to reverse the momentum.
