Mariano Rivera saves 600th, one shy of Major League Baseball record – MLB News
New York Yankees’ veteran closer Mariano Rivera has entered the name of his club in another record taking 600th save in the team’s second straight win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, September 13.
Mariano Rivera entered the mound and shined carrying his usual form to add his 600th save of his career. It was the 41st save of the season for the 41-year-old Rivera, who also helped starter Allan Jones Burnett to get his first since
August 5.
As soon as Rivera completed his spell, his team-mates rushed him, embraced him and popped him up in the air.
"They are family away from your family. It was great seeing them all come to the mound," Rivera said.
Rivera has not lost his game since August 24 and now has an eight game streak. Although his record making save was against the struggling Seattle Mariners, his overall performance leaves him just one save shy of Trevor Hoffman for a Major League Baseball
Record.
Next outing might be a record tier and it could be a game that can provide the Yankees one of their best achievements. Rivera has not left the Yankees in his 16-year career and has made 10 All-Star appearances under the Yankees flag.
"I don't know if we'll ever see it again. That's how much of an accomplishment this is that he and Trevor Hoffman have done. Simply remarkable," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "This is a guy who I believe is the best closer that's ever been in the game
and I've had the fortune of catching him, coaching him and managing him and it's a treat."
Rivera is one of the Yankees’ finest players, as he has played 1036 games in his 16-year career. Throughout his career, he has been the Yankees major closer, who was normally given the ball under great pressure but he always took the Yankees from grave situations.
He has a 75-57 win-loss record with a 2.22 ERA. He also made ten starts in his entire career.
