Marieke Guehrer and Andrew Gillespie impress at 2011 Australian University Games – Day one: Recap
Day one of the 2011 Australian University Games began in scintillating fashion with the performance of Marieke Guehrer and Andrew Gillespie in Gold Coast, on Tuesday, September 27. The session of the meet conducted the Women’s and Men’s 50m back-stroke final
heats.
At the beginning, Marieke Guehrer of University of Melbourne powered the finishing wall in 29.05 seconds to grab the Women’s 50m back-stroke title on the podium. Guehrer won two gold medals in the Women’s 50m butterfly category at both the 2009 and 2010
editions of the World Championships and Pan Pacific Championships, in Rome and Irvine, respectively.
In addition, Marieke earned two gold medals in the Women’s 4x100m freestyle events at the 2010 and 2011 editions of the Commonwealth Games and Summer Universiade, in Delhi and Shenzhen, respectively.
Grace Loh of University of Melbourne earned silver in a time of 29.08 seconds, while Karina Leane of Flinders University settled for bronze in a time of 30.35 seconds. Katrina Schieber of University of Queensland earned fourth spot in 30.89 seconds, whereas,
Rebecca Harry of Queensland of Technology settled for fifth position in 31.37 seconds.
Samantha Bennett of Monash University finished sixth in a time of 31.98 seconds. On the other hand, Jessica Henshaw of University of Queensland earned seventh place honours with a mark of 32.32 seconds. Finally, Kate Thompson of University of Queensland
settled for eighth place in a time of 32.68 seconds.
In the Men’s 50m back-stroke event, Queensland University of Technology’s swimmer, Andrew Gillespie hit the finishing wall in 26.53 seconds to win gold medal on the podium. In the corresponding race, Atte Liimatanien of Macquarie University clinched silver
medal on the podium with an impressive mark of 27.46 seconds.
Raymond Mak of University of Melbourne settled for third spot in a time of 27.60 seconds, whereas, Thomas Moreton of Monash University earned fourth place honours with a mark of 27.73 seconds. In the corresponding splash, Matthew Spence of University of
New South Wales was placed fifth in a time of 27.92 seconds, while Andrew Kennedy of University of New South Wales settled sixth in a time of 28.29 seconds.
Ernest Lourens of University of South Australia earned seventh place honours with a time of 29.16 seconds, whereas, Samuel Hall of University of Queensland wound up eighth in 29.84 seconds.
The 2011 Australian University Games is a good opportunity for athletes, as it will definitely help young guns to improve their swimming skills for futuristic meets.
