Marieke Guehrer and Kyle Richardson impress in Gold Coast – Swimming news
Marieke Guehrer of University of Melbourne and Kyle Richardson of Queensland University of Technology continued to impress the arena on day three of the 2011 Australian University Games, in Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Queensland, on Thursday, September 29.
Guehrer and Richardson took part in the Women’s and Men’s 100m freestyle final heats.
The 2010 Commonwealth gold medallist, Marieke Guehrer ousted University of Melbourne’s Jessica Morrison and University of Sydney’s Mel Houghton by clinching the Women’s 100m freestyle title with a stunning mark of 56.87 seconds. Both athletes, Morrison and
Houghton settled for second and third spots on the podium by posting a time of 57.35 seconds and 58.24 seconds, respectively.
In the corresponding splash, Bond University’s Jade Neilsen and Flinders University’s Karina Leane earned fourth and fifth place honours with a mark of 58.28 seconds and 58.92 seconds, respectively. In the meantime, Ashleigh Mccleery of Griffith University
clinched sixth position with a time of 59.15 seconds. Additionally, Madeleine Hunnik Van of Queensland University of Technology settled seventh with a time of 1 minute and 00.21 seconds. Finally, the eighth place went to University of Queensland’s athlete,
Rebecca Pegg with a mark of 1 minute and 00.82 seconds.
On the other hand, double Commonwealth gold medallist, Kyle Richardson gave a stunning attempt in the Men’s 100m freestyle final heat by notching the golden crown on the podium with a victorious mark of 50.93 seconds. In the corresponding race, Kurt Herzog
of University of Technology earned silver crown by submitting a matchless mark of 52.42 seconds.
Meanwhile, Matthew Spence settled for bronze title with a time of 52.94 seconds. Moreover, University of Melbourne and Macquarie University’s athletes, Raymond Mak and Christopher Warren continued to impress the arena by getting fourth and fifth positions
in the meet with a decisive mark of 54.74 seconds and 55.48 seconds, respectively.
Furthermore, three other athletes out of top eight including Macquarie University’s Harrison Pullinger, University of Melbourne’s Christopher Parker Tass and Macquarie University’s Atte Liimatanien also showed their swimming skills by getting sixth, seventh
and eighth places in the overall meet with an impressive mark of 57.66 seconds, 57.75 seconds and 58.88 seconds, respectively.
The top three performers were delivered medals and accolades due to their versatile swims after the session’s completion. The 2011 Australian University Games is an important event for young guns of Australia, as it will prepare them well for their upcoming
meets at the 2012 Olympic Games, in London.
