Marieke Guehrer and Kyle Richardson pocket gold medals: 2011 Australian University Games - Recap
Marieke Guehrer and Kyle Richardson added another gold medal to their medal tally by winning gold medals of 200m freestyle in Women’s and Men’s corner on the last day of 2011 Australian University Games. The session completed on September 29, at the Gold
Coast Aquatic Centre, in Queensland.
Guehrer continue her dominance on third day of the championship and collected her sixth individual and eighth gold medal of the championship.
University of Melbourne’s Guehrer outshined her competitors by claiming the title of 100m freestyle with a 56.87 seconds effort. Her effort was highly admirable as the gold winning Guehrer remained 0.25 seconds behind her own championship mark of 56.62 seconds,
set at the 2009 University Games.
With her exceptional power and unflawed strokes, Guehrer smothered the hopes of her rivals in the dual-lap freestyle swim. She was the quickest swimmer to jump-off the starting blocks, whereas, she extended her lead over her competitors while sprinting her
way to the first turn.
In the second lap, the champion’s accelerated leg-action coupled with her powerful arm-strokes helped her in obtaining a 0.48 seconds lead over her team-member, Jessica Morrison. The 19-year-old Morrison, who remained slightly away from Guehrer, stepped
on the victory stand for silver medal by submitting an extraordinary effort of 57.35 seconds.
Morrison was trailed by University of Sydney’s Mel Houghton, who was nearly a second away from her. The 25-year-old Houghton exploited her gruelling strategy, but she failed to engage her preceding swimmer in a neck-to-neck swim. Nevertheless, her efforts
were adequate to keep her on the victory stand for bronze medal as she touched the wall in 58.24 seconds.
Meanwhile, QLD University of Technology’s Richardson proved his mettle for the crown of equivalent event in Men’s corner. With his strangling performance in the freestyle event, Richardson escaped his competitors for the gold medal, reporting a time of 50.93
seconds.
His effort was 0.26 seconds slower than the championship mark of 50.67 seconds, made by Mitchell Patterson of Macquarie University in 2008.
Richardson was 1.49 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, University of Technology- Sydney’s Kurt Herzog, who settled on the victory stand for silver medal with a timing of 52.42 seconds. University of NSW’s Matthew Spence was the third fastest finisher
of the event, as she posted a 52.94 seconds effort for the bronze medal.
Guehrer’s continued dominance in the three-day championship made her the arena’s spotlight, while Richardson was also delighted with his title claiming effort. Furthermore, the competition concluded after the completion of all planned events and the winners
received their medals after the session.
