Marieke Guehrer occupies Women’s 50m freestyle gold – EnergyAustralia SC Championships
Marieke Guehrer of Melbourne occupied gold medal of the Women’s 50m freestyle on last day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Short Course Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth on Sunday, September 16.
The 26-year-old Guehrer stifled hopes of her opponents in the shortest freestyle discipline, where she earned her way to the top of victory stand for gold medal. Guehrer faced tough battle from her strongest challenger but managed to outperform her over the wall for gold medal.
Her stupendous efforts remained just an inch ahead of her subsequent rival as she tapped the wall for gold medal with a wonderful timing of 24.45 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Olivia Halicek of University NSW, who stayed only 0.12 seconds behind and stepped on the medal rostrum for silver medal by submitting a time of 24.57 seconds.
Halicek was traced by Alexander Purcell of Southport Olympic Swimming Club, who stayed 0.04 seconds apart and touched the wall for bronze medal with an effort of 24.61 seconds.
The third position holder was followed by Brittany Elmslie of Nudgee Brothers, who stayed half a body length away from her former finisher and tapped the wall with a timing of 25.12 seconds for fourth place.
Elmslie was chased by Sally Foster of Central Aquatic, who remained only 0.02 seconds away from her foregoing finisher and touched the wall for fifth position with an effort of 25.14 seconds.
Sixth best spot of the event was secured by Angie Bainbridge of Hunter, NSW, who suffered a loss of only 0.01 seconds from her former finisher and hit the wall with an effort of 25.15 seconds.
Bainbridge was trailed by Sara Marson of Twin Towns, who was 0.11 seconds slower and submitted a time of 25.26 seconds.
Marson was followed by Jessica Morrison of Melbourne VIC, who remained 0.10 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and ended eighth in the event by producing an effort of 25.36 seconds.
In addition, Guehrer expressed happiness over her victory after the 50m event and articulated her desire of struggling hard to accomplish the same at superior levels of swimming.
