Marieke Guehrer secures Women’s 50m back-stroke title: Day One – 2011 Australian University Games
University of Melbourne’s Marieke Guehrer occupied gold medal of Women’s 50m back-stroke category on the opening day of the 2011 Australian University Games. The event took place on Tuesday, September 27, at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Queensland.
With her relentless effort, Guehrer claimed the gold medal of the event by submitting a top ranked time of 29.05 seconds. Her time was 0.64 seconds under her own Games Record of 29.69 seconds, set by Guehrer in 2009.
The gold medallist was trailed by her team-member, Grace Loh, who was just 0.03 seconds slower than her and reported a time of 29.08 seconds for the silver crown. Third spot on the podium was secured by Karina Leane of Flinders University, who was 1.27 seconds
behind the second position holder and reached the podium for bronze medal with an admiring effort of 30.35 seconds.
Moments later, the 26-year-old Katrina Schieber demonstrated her gruelling strategy and settled on the finishing wall for fourth finest spot. University of Queensland’s Leane remained 0.54 seconds slower than her competitor and posted a time of 30.89 seconds.
The fifth spot of the race was claimed by Queensland University of Technology’s Rebecca Harry, who ended her single lap sprint in a time of 31.37 seconds.
Similarly, Monash University’s Samantha Bennett earned sixth position of the swim, as she remained 0.61 seconds slower than her former finisher and clocked a time of 31.98 seconds. Bennett was trailed by University of Queensland’s Jessica Henshaw, who hit
the finishing wall in a time of 32.32 seconds for seventh position. Henshaw’s team-mate, Kate Thompson was the final swimmer of the event, as she remained just 0.36 seconds behind her and concluded her swim in a time of 32.68 seconds for the eighth position.
Guehrer was extremely delighted with her fabulous victory in the back-stroke discipline. In addition, the crowd also acknowledged the laudable efforts of all participants in the shortest back-stroke discipline, while podium finishers received medals and
accolades for their stunning efforts after the session’s completion.
