Marieke Guehrer wins Women’s 100m freestyle semi-final – EnergyAustralia SC Championships
Marieke Guehrer of Melbourne VIC won the semi-final of Women’s 100m freestyle on day two of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Short Course Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth on Thursday, September 13.
The 26-year-old Guehrer demonstrated her astonishing efforts in the four-lap freestyle discipline as she sustained her fastest qualification spot in the second round to enter the final as top contender for gold medal.
Guehrer remained just an inch ahead of her following swimmer on the finishing end and tapped the wall for top qualifying position with a timing of 53.68 seconds.
Guehrer was followed by Angie Bainbridge of Hunter, NSW, who stayed 0.07 seconds slower from improving her position and tapped the wall with an effort of 53.75 seconds.
Bainbridge was followed by Kotuku Ngawati of Melbourne VIC and Brittany Elmslie of Nudgee Brothers, who involved each other in a stroke-to-stroke battle for third finest position.
Both swimmers tried hard to surpass each other over the finishing blockade and ended in a joint finish for third position by touching the wall with an effort of 54.00 seconds.
Subsequently, the duo of third fastest finishers was chased by Jessica Morrison of Melbourne VIC, who remained 0.03 seconds apart and remained prominent for fifth best position of the event by submitting a time of 54.03 seconds.
Morrison was chased by Kelly Stubbins of Waterlions, who tried hard to overpass her preceding swimmer but remained 0.21 seconds slower from her over the finishing blockade and completed her swim in sixth best place.
Stubbins stayed just a stroke away from her former finisher and hit the wall with a timing of 54.24 seconds.
Seventh position of the race was obtained by Brianna Throssell of Perth City, who remained 0.22 seconds behind and ended her race by submitting a time of 54.46 seconds.
Throssell was traced by Holly Barratt of Swan Hills, who suffered a loss of 0.20 seconds behind and touched the wall with a timing of 54.66 seconds for eighth position.
Guehrer was contented with her fastest qualification effort and said that she would try to secure gold medal by dominating the playoff.
