Mariel Zagunis grabs the top position in Women’s Sabre World Rankings
As per new rankings of Women’s Sabre weapon category, the two-time Olympic Champion, Mariel Zagunis, from United States secured her first place in the 2010-11 season. The International Federation of Fencing, Fédération Internationale d'Escrime updated the
rankings after the competition for the month of June.
Last month, Italian Ilaria Bianco was at the eighth position in the top 10 list, but she dropped to 14th place with 103 points. Italian Irene Vecchi entered in the Top 10 list as the ninth number fencer in Women’s Sabre. The two-time World Champion,
Zagunis, participated in two international competitions for the month of June. Challenge Yves Brasseur of Sabre took place on June 10 in Belgium, while 2011 The New York Sabre World Cup for Women took place on June 24 in United States. The Olympic Champion
could not perform well in the Belgium competition and dropped from the table of 64. She was placed at the 17th position in that competition with a loss of four points.
In the 2011 New York Sabre World Cup, Zagunis reached the final bout by winning the pool matches and direct elimination tables. In the final, she faced the Russian fencer, Sophia Velikaia, who is currently ranked second in the World Rankings. Zagunis lost
her final bout to Sophia with the score-line of 15-6 in the competition. Zagunis was ranked second in the competition with a silver medal and 26 rankings points. As she was already having the highest points in the previous month’s ranking, so she was able
to secure her first place in the World Rankings. Russian Julia Gavrilova secured the fifth place last month and now she stepped up to the fourth position in the list.
The top ten rankings are as follows:
1. Mariel Zagunis from United States with 314 points
2. Sophia Velikaia from Russia with 263 points
3. Olga Kharlan from Ukraine with 250 points
4. Julia Gavrilova from Russia with 161 points
5. Ekaterina Diatchenko from Russia with 155 points
6. Min Zhu from China with 146 points
7. Olena Khomrova from Ukraine with 144 points
8. Azza Besbes from Tunisia with 138 points
9. Irene Vecchi from Italy with 122 points
10. Aleksandra Socha from Poland with 122 points
