Marilynn Smith recalls her adventurous golf career
The one of the most senior golf players, Marilynn Smith, is remembering her adventurous achievements and lifetime honours these days.
The 82-year-old American professional golf player is the most renowned personality in women’s golf.
She was born in Topeka Kansas in 1929 and started playing golf while studying at the University of Kansas.
She is one of the thirteen founders of LPGA and enjoyed her debut year in 1950. She was unable to win at a younger age and strived hard till 1954. She recorded her first professional win at the Fort Wayne Open.
Smith played her last event in 1972 and till then she recorded 23 impressive professional victories, out of which 21 are at the LPGA.
With amazing finishes and several runner-up positions, she is also famous for winning two consecutive major titles of the Titleholders Championship in 1963 and 1964.
Moreover, she played golf in 37 countries, 50 states and with five respected Presidents of the United States. She was remembering all the honours and time spent with amazing people.
“Can you believe it?” Smith said. “A little girl like me from Kansas got to do all of that because of golf”.
She recently showed her presence at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup and all the officials welcomed her warmly.
The LPGA tournament is in process at the Wildfire Golf Club in Phoenix Arizona. Her eyes were filled with tears after watching the huge celebrations on the course and she missed all the glorifying achievements.
“We founders are very proud of the progress,” Smith said. “It is unbelievable how the equipment has changed. And there is a fitness center. We just went out and hit more golf balls to stay in shape”.
She added, “A lot of things have changed. But it is just marvellous to see the girls shooting such low scores these days”.
Smith is happy to see women’s golf flourishing worldwide. In the previous times, women’s golf did not have widespread viewership. Nor was it played by many.
However, now golf is everywhere and is the favourite of many youngsters as well.
“We just lived day to day, went step by step,” Smith said. “We were one big family. We were all very close. We loved the game so much. And we’re all so happy to see how big women’s golf is today”.
