Marin Cilic, Dustin Brown through to the second round of BMW Open
Marin Cilic beats Simone Bolelli 7-5, 7-6(4)
Croatian Marin Cilic, ranked 21st in the world, prevailed over world number 122 Simone Bolelli of Italy in straight sets 7-5, 7-6(4) in the opening round at the BMW Open in Munich on Tuesday. It took the Croatian two
hours and two minutes to oust his opponent in an evenly contested match.
Cilic broke Bolelli in the 11th game of the first set and held his serve in the next game to win the set 7-5. The Croatian served quite well as he fired seven aces and converted 77 percent of his first serves into points
in the opening set. The 22-year-old converted the only break point he received in the first set.
Both players exchanged a single break of serve in the second set, taking it to a tie-break. Cilic clinched two mini-breaks in the tie-break and won it 7-4. The Croatian delivered four aces and committed two double faults in the
second set.
Talking to the reporters after the match, Cilic said, “Today was a tough match, first round against Bolelli. He’s a good player on clay… it wasn’t easy. I saved a lot of break points in the first set especially and came back from
a break down when he was serving for the set in the second, so I have to be pleased with that.”
The Croatian will face world number 113 Horacio Zeballos of Argentina in the round of 16.
Dustin Brown ousts Stanislas Wawrinka 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-5
World number 123 Dustin Brown of Germany upset world number 14 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in three thrilling sets 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the second round.
Wawrinka and Brown broke each other once in the opening set, forcing a tie-break. Wawrinka claimed a late mini-break in the tie-break, winning it 8-6. The Swiss fired a couple of aces and 67 percent of the first serves in the opening
set.
Brown needed a single break of serve in the second set to win it 6-4. The German hit three aces and a single double fault in the second set.
In the deciding set, Brown broke Wawrinka in the 12th game and captured the set 7-5. The 26-year-old delivered 58 percent of the first serves, converting 71 percent of them into points in the third set.
The German said, after the match, “I’ve had a lot of tough losses this year against guys like Querrey and Montanes, but I really felt like I could do this today. Even after losing the first set, I still stayed in it and I’m happy
I pulled through."
Brown will take on Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic in the second round.
