Marin Cilic devastates Di Wu in opening round clash – China Open 2011
An excellent start to the China Open campaign for the world number 25, Marin Cilic of Croatia, as he defeated the local wildcard entrant, Di Wu, in the opening round encounter with the utmost ease.
Croatia’s number one tennis player took merely 55 minutes to register a straight sets victory at 6-2, 6-0, to move in to the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event.
The unseeded Croat appeared absolutely unplayable in the competition, winning two of the total 14 games being played in the matchup. Cilic raced through the competition, keeping the games short and professional to drive his opponent
out of the tournament in the most assertive fashion.
The Chinese opponent appeared in all sorts of confusion right from the beginning and dropped his serve in the very first game of the match. Wu recovered his serve in the next game to bring Cilic down on even terms but the Croat
exhibited some exceptional power hitting to snatch back the advantage a couple of games later. Cilic nailed two successive break points in the fifth and the seventh games of the opener to seal the first set at 6-2.
Wu slumped further in the next set and completely lost his steam to let his opponent take the better of him. He utterly failed to hold serve in any game of the set and suffered three straight serve breaks to lose the matchup. Cilic
reeled off nine out of 10 first serve points in the second set and broke the Chinese opponent in his every single serve game to fly away to victory. He registered a total of six break points conversions in the matchup, with Wu recording just one break through
to finish on the losing side in the end.
Cilic will either take on the second seeded Frenchman, Gael Monfils, or the unseeded Italian competitor, Fabio Fognini, in the next round to fight for a place in the quarter-finals of the China Open. Monfils and Fognini will go
one-on-one against each other on Tuesday, with the winner booking a clash with Cilic in the second round of the tournament.
