Marin Cilic makes short work of qualifier Filippo Volandri in the Monte Carlo Masters first round
Fifteenth seed Marin Cilic scored an easy win at the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters just minutes ago, defeating qualifier Filippo Volandri in straight sets at the first round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament. The Croatian tennis pro took one hour and five minutes to put an end to Volandri’s dreams of a good showing at Monte Carlo, ousting him 6-2, 6-1.
It was an easy victory for Cilic, who has never met Volandri on the courts before this. The Croat is currently ranked World Number 22, and has been part of the Association of Tennis Professionals for six years. He first began competing as a pro in 2005, and has won five titles over the course of his career so far. The player, who is 22 years old, has won thirteen of the twenty matches he took part in prior to this tournament.
Filippo Volandri, on the other hand, is ranked World Number 76 at the moment and is 29 years old. The pro has been playing with the Association of Tennis Professionals since 1997, and has consequently spent over thirteen years on Tour. Over the course of these years, he has managed to win two career titles. However, the 29-year-old’s career now seems to be drawing to a close as he has lost most of the main draw matches he has played so far in 2011.
Marin Cilic scored three aces during the match, and committed just one double fault. Volandri could not break him even once, although the Croatian pro managed to successfully convert five of nine break points during the match. Marin Cilic concluded the match by winning an impressive 54 of 86 points, taking a 63 per cent of the total points played in the match.
The two players have never competed against each other prior to this. Their head to head record is now 1-0 to Marin Cilic. He will face either Potito Starace or qualifier Pere Riba in the second round of the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters.
