Marin Cilic to miss 2012 Chennai Open due to an injury – Tennis News

World number twenty-one, Marin Cilic will miss out on next year’s Chennai Open due to a severe leg injury. He participated in this tournament for five consecutive years and won it twice in 2009 and 2010, taking $450,000 in prize
money. He entered the tournament as a defending champion this year but was stunned in the first round by one of the most improved players of 2011, Kei Nishikori of Japan.
Croatian contacted the officials of the tournament, apprised them of his condition and apologized from participating in the most elite event of South Asian region courtesy a chronic leg injury. Organizers were very saddened by
the fact that one of the most prolific performer of the tournament was missing in 2012.
Cilic was disappointed for not being able to participate in the event but he was happy with the fact that he was recovering from the injury at a rapid pace and will be available to return to courts in foreseeable future.
Talking about his non-participation in the Chennai event and status of his injury, he said, “Having started the previous five seasons at the Chennai Open, the city is a home away from home for me. Thankfully, I am recovering well
from the patellar tendon injury and I'll surely be back next year."
Two-time Chennai Open winner is having rest at the moment but plans to land at the practice courts soon. Organizers of the tournament were disappointed to miss out on such a talented player but were happy to build up an eye-catching
squad for the tournament.
2011 Chennai Open winner, Stanislas Wawrinka will face a tough time at the courts defending his title against the likes of Serbian world number nine, Janko Tipsarevic, Spanish world number ten, Nicolas Almagro and 20-year-old Canadian,
Milos Raonic. Raonic is awarded the ATP's newcomer of the year for 2011 and ranks 31 in the world at the moment. The strong line-up will definitely make the teenagers life very hard to retain his title at the Indian soil.
The tournament will kick-off from January 2 and extend till January 8, next year. The tournament will be contested at the hard courts of Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium situated in Chennai, India. It is the only prestigious event that
is played in this part of the world and provides a good warm-up session before the players enter the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, Australian Open.
