As every up comer tries their luck to stardom, Marin Cilic, the Croatian super star went on against the mighty Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro on the hard courts of Stade Uniprix in Montreal, Canada as the pair met for their second
round match at the 2011 Rogers Cup. Overpowered by a gigantic Croatian, Del Potro was jolted with a 3-6, 4-6 loss.
Aged 22, the two tennis sensations had their 5th head-to-head match here in Stade Uniprix Centre. Previously, the Argentine world No.19 had dominated the tussle; however, Cilic was certainly making his mark. Winning
7 out of the last 10 matches he played, the Croatian was surely a hard work for the former world No.4, Del Potro.
On the other hand, the phenomenal Argentine was down on his luck this time. The defeat seemed more of a catastrophe for the Argentine.
Although there was one winner in the match, the two have certainly performed magnificently lately. At this age, 22-years-old, both have achieved the top rankings, Marlin Cilic formerly World No.9 and Del Potro as former World No.4.
Kicking off with the 2nd rounder, Cilic opened up the serve and the scorecard, 1-0. With a neck-to-neck battle, the two won games on respective serves levelling on 2-2, then 3-3. Winning game 7 of the first set, Cilic
turned the tables breaking the Argentine to take the lead 5-3 in the set. Serving for the 9th game, the Croatian stormed the former world No.4 to snatch the first set winning 6-3 and onto the next set.
Stalling 1 set, Del Potro served for the second set opener and took the advantage lead, 1-0. Covering the lead, Cilic levelled the scores, 1-1 and then again on 2-2. The Argentine was at the verge of his domination in the set when
h**l “Cilic” broke. Scores now at 3-2, the Croatian served the 6th game extending his lead to 4-2. With an unbreakable defence, Cilic retained his lead till the set ended 6-4, shattering the Argentine once again.
Clearing the 2nd round, Marin Cilic now sits in the round of 16 to play Serbian world number one, Novak Djokovic, for the quarter-final round seat.
