Marin Cilic will register his comeback at Chennai Open - Tennis News
Right-hander Croatia professional, Marin Cilic, was unable to contest for the Aircel Chennai Open 2012 due to his troubled patellar tendon. In the upcoming year, he is passionate about his campaign at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament,
as this will serve as his practise session for the upcoming Australian Open Grand Slam 2013.
In an interview with the media, Cilic said, “I always feel pretty good in Chennai, have won it twice and it gives me confidence to start a year with several wins. Also, the weather there helps me in preparing for the hot days in
Australia. I feel that my serve improved last season but there is still room for it to get better. Also I hope to work on my defence as that can help me to develop my all round game. I’ll try to win 50 matches next season since I have never touched that figure
within a year before.”
Ranked 15th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Cilic displayed a remarkable improvement in his performance than the previous year. Despite of his absence, he battled until the quarter-finals of the
Dallas Challenger but suffered a shocker at the hands of Frank Dancevic. At the Monte- Carlo Rolex Masters, he received a thrashing defeat in the second round at the hands of the Czech contestant, Tomas Berdych.
His performance was satisfactory in the clay court season. He had to face disappointing beating twice at the hands of the rising Argentinean professional, Del Potro. The higher ranked professional skilfully handed him a loss in
the third round at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open and at the French Open 2012.
The 24-year-old made it until the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships. At the Western and South Open in Cincinnati, he drastically improved his game plan but suffered a straight sets loss by the reigning world number one,
Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. Currently, he is working hard on his weak areas in order to break the glass ceiling hindering his future success. If the right-hander Croat continues with the same potential than before, he has a fair chance to achieve
a decent spot in the world top 10.
