Marina Erakovic stuns Su-Wei Hsieh in round one – PTT Pattaya Open 2013
World number 75, Marina Erakovic, registered an upset against the third seed Taiwanese star, Su-Wei Hsieh, in the opening round of the PTT Pattaya Open on Monday. She bamboozled the 25th ranked competitor in straight
sets 6-2, 6-2 to book a spot in the second round of the event.
Despite losing the previous two battles against Hsieh, the 24-year-old Kiwi didn’t panic and started off with a flier. She broke serve in the second game of the match and took the lead of 2-0 at the start. However, the lead was
cut short by the 27-year-old Taiwanese who broke serve immediately and protected it with a serve hold to equalise.
Erakovic pushed her opponent on the back foot for the second time in the set during the fifth game when she won four straight points to win a breakpoint from 40:15 to Hsieh. The third seed contestant was rocked back in the seventh
game when she faced the third straight break on her serve. Erakovic wasted little time in rounding off the opening set proceedings; won four consecutive points on her serve.
The second set witnessed another terrible start for the Taiwanese superstar who went down a couple of breakpoints by the end of the fifth game. The Kiwi professional kept the pressure on her rival by holding her serve and making
it 5-1 in her favour. Finally, the Taiwanese third seed was able to extend the match by holding her serve and disallowing her opponent from running away with the show. The final game witnessed three deuces and Hsieh failed to convert any off the allotted breakpoint
to her favour that ended the encounter in the favour of her rival.
It was a classic start to the tournament for Erakovic. She will be squaring off against the Varatchaya Wongteanchai of Thailand who received a wildcard by the officials of the tournament and capsized the German youngster, Annika
Beck, in the opening round. So, it will be a battle between the two upset queens. It is expected that both players will contest a close three-setter in the second round with Erakovic having an upper hand.
