Marina Erakovic terminates Sofia Arvidsson in the 1st round – Bank of the West Classic 2011
Tuesday, 26th of July 2011, was the continuation of the first round of the Bank of the West Classic 2011. Both players meeting for the first time were Marina Erakovic and Sofia Arvidsson. They battled
each other on the outdoor hard courts at the Taube Family Tennis Center, Stanford University, California. Marina won the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Marina won the toss; served first with determination and smashed four aces however in the next few moments; due to lack of precision she struck two double faults hitting the net where as Sofia performed with excellent precession
and struck zero double faults. Both the players had won and saved fifty percent of their break points. Although Sofia’s serve was like an offensive weapon but her defence was weak and was only able to win thirty nine percent of her total return points.
Mean while her opponents (Marina’s) defence was much stronger along with a good serve, she won more points in the total set points and hence she won the set with 6-2.
During the second set, Sofia’s performance did not improve instead of learning from the first set; she did exactly what she wasn’t supposed to. This time it was Sofia, who was serving first with cold feet she hit an ace and opened
the score card to 1-0; although both the players had zero double faults, Marina had improved her accuracy from the first set and she also hit three aces throughout the set.
The Croatian born Kiwi (Marina) had won all her first serve points but was unable to win any points in the second serve, however her defence was very strong and she allowed no break point opportunities to her opponent instead she
had capitalized on her opponent’s break points twice along with a concrete return serve she was a barricade that would backfire all her opponent’s serves.
Although Sofia saved five out of the seven break point opportunities on her serve, and even managed to win a hundred percent of her second return points, she still lost the set because of a relatively poor performance in her serve
and first return serve and also, because Marina did not allow Sofia any break point chances. Marina won the second set with almost twice as many points than her opponents with a 6-1 victory.
Born on the 6th of March, 1988, the 23-year-old achieved impeccable success in straight two sets. The current world number 121 has had a great year although her career high ranking was of world number 49 on July the
7th 2008. She has had thirty six wins out of the total forty six matches that she has played during this year.
