Question:

Marine Officer Chance Of Getting A Particular MOS?

Now I know that a newly commissioned 2nd Lt must take whatever MOS awarded to them by the USMC, and is lucky for it. But I'm wondering if there are any specific qualities that could get a certain Specialty barring any predetermined contract like Aviation or Law. I'm thinking like a certain degree from college or a certain test score on a military test ( ASVABs for enlisted right?) or hows that work?

How do they decide a Marine Officers specialty?

  1. As a Marine, forget medical or chaplain.

They like to give an officer training in different areas over the years he/she's in the service, so they'll eventually be prepared for a higher command position.  The larger variety you know, the better off you are.

Now if you decide to become a warrant officer, you pretty much have a lot of training and knowledge in a specific "MOS".  You stay in that job throughout your career, unless you gain training in another job as well.  It's best to remain in one and become a "master" in your field.

  2. Get the best scores you can at tbs

  3. It's contractual. The recruiter fills out a "dream sheet" and sends that forward. A Career Counselor contacts the recruiter and lets him know what you qualify for and whats available. Aviation (rotor or winged), JAG and medical (AHMED) are the only contractually gaurenteed MOS'. Military Police is the most sought after MOS for officers outside of those that I mentioned. Hard to get.

Short version is you apply for what you want and attach two options and locations that you will settle for. And 99% of the time you get one of the three.
