Ok i have a question, what is the proper way of doing pull ups.

is it with your palms facing in towards your face like the picture below?

Or your palms facing out like the picture below?

If it doesn't matter what do you recommend that i do for a recruit who will go to basic in end of oct. I have 2 1/2 months to prepare and i am looking to hit around 10-15, and i will dedicate myself for full 2 1/2 months 6 days a week working out. Is one easier then the other? what are the benefits of doing one of the other?

  1. For your PFT it is either way. Whichever is more comfortable. It wasn't until my third PFT that someone finally clued me in on that...doing it palms facing you is much easier and I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get as many reps as most of the marines in my platoon.

Heres how to do it. You grab hold of the bar and relax yourself to full extension until the CFL tells you to begin, then you only have to pull yourself up until your chin touches the bar, not all the way over. then you MUST relax back down to full extension before you can begin your next rep. Your back must stay as flat to the bar as possible and someone will stand behind you to maek sure it doesn't bow out during your reps.

Liek I said, this is for the bi-yearly PFT...I never went to Marine bootcamp so I don't know how more anal they will be.

  2. I dont want to give you the wrong advice but when I did it and last I heard it was either way..

But here is the deal with USMC pull ups..

You need to go all the way up, chin must pass the bar, you must come all the way down, elbows must lock each and every time..If you do not do them this way then they will not count..

And one last thing..You DO NOT just jump on the bar and begin your set..You first mount the bar when told and you must hang there for a second or three..then they will say BEGIN..then you do your set..once done you DO NOT just dismount, you must come to a dead hang and wait to be told to get off then you dismount..This takes up energy, so be sure to practice this way..

Here is some USMC boot camp info for you..

  3. MARINE CORPS!

    palms facing you!

  4. you can do either for your pft, however from my personal experience doing them with palms facing out builds strength better and is easier to maintain
