  1. It all depends on your MOS, work ethic and company. There are only a certain number of promotions given out during the promotional period. There is also a promotion board. Depending on your work ethic, you can pick up rank quicker "meritoriously". I say it depends on your company as well, because if you have 9 E3s in the company all with equal service time not all are going to get promoted. There are a lot of variables when it comes to promotion. When picking up ranks, nothing is set in stone.

  2. E-1 through E-3 are basically gimmes.  If you enlist as PFC/E-2 you'll promoted to LCpl/E-3 after 9 months time is service.  As for as LCpl to Cpl/E-4 you'll have to have the cutting score and be recommended for promotion.

You'll start getting your cutting score, if I remeber right, after 9 months time in grade as a LCpl.  The cutting scores are made up of rifle scores, pft scores, Proficeincy/conduct marks, time is service, time and grade and MCCIs or college credits.  There really isn't a guarenteed time to make Cpl b/c it'll depend on the MOS that you're in.  If your MOS has a lot of Cpls then it could be closed for promotion or have a insanely high cutting score.

Also to reiterate you'll have to be recommeded for promotion by your command.  If you've gotten NJP'd, get a pg 11 or just fail to show any leadership ability you won't get promoted regardless of your score.  Most Marines can expect to get promoted to Cpl through their cutting scores within 3-4 years.

If you're able to go up for a meritorious promotion board you can get promoted as soon as you hit the TIG/TIS requirements.

  3. Promotions from E-1 to E-3 are automatic promotions based only on Time-In-Service (TIS) with six months Time-In-Grade (TIG)

    Private (E-1) - Starting Rank

Private First Class (E-2) - Six months TIS with six months TIG

Lance Corporal (E-3) - Nine months TIS and eight months TIG

The promotions to E-4 and above in the Marine Corps are competitive. That means there are only so many "vacancies" in each grade (above E-3) in each MOS (job). For promotions to the ranks of Corporal and Sergeant, the Marines use a system of composite scores. Composite Scores are calculated each quarter (every 3 months). Composite Score points are awarded from each of the following areas - Marksmanship scores, PFT scores, TIS, TIG, Proficiency, College credits, and Conduct. To be eligible Marines must first meet the minimum TIS and TIG requirements:

Corporal (E-4) - 12 months TIS and 8 months TIG

Sergeant (E-5) - 24 months TIS and 12 months TIG

For E-6 through E-9 promotions, the Commandant of the Marine Corps convenes a promotion board once per year. In order to be eligible to be considered for promotion by the board, Marines must meet the following TIS and TIG requirements:

Staff Sergeant (E-6) - 4 years TIS and 24 months TIG

Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) - 6 years TIS and 3 years TIG

    Master Sergeant/First Sergeant (E-8) - 8 years TIS and 4 years TIG

Master Gunnery Sergeant/Sergeant Major (E-9) - 10 years TIS and 3 years TIG
